A mother and 12 year old son were on a Carnival cruise to Mexico when the ship’s doctors diagnosed the boy with appendicitis. Emergency surgery was needed to remove the boy’s appendix and bowels. Complicating matters, the family did not purchase travel insurance nor were they traveling with passports.
The hospital in Mexico wanted $3,300 in cash for the surgery and was charging another $900 for each day that Peyton Johnson was in the hospital, money the family did not have. Carnival sent an interpreter to help the Johnsons and paid for the family to receive passports when they reached the US embassy. However, the family still did not have the money to pay for the hospital bills or for a flight back home to Ohio.
In stepped good Samaritans, who have donated over $13,000 through GoFundMe (including Carnival Care Team with a $3,330 donation) when they heard about series of unfortunate events. The bills have amounted close to $14,000 in Mexico.
Carnival Cruise Lines has refunded the family’s cruise fare and is working toward helping fund the family’s trip home. They are expected to return to the US on Saturday where Peyton will receive care in Houston before traveling back home to Ohio.
Love how much Carnival and the other good Samaritans did
