With over 3 million cruise passengers visiting the popular port of Cozumel so far in 2018, a study is being done on building a fourth dock on the Caribbean island for cruise ships Riviera Maya News is reporting.
Local officials have reached out to two environmental organizations to analyze the environmental impacts on a fourth cruise terminal being constructed.
Riviera Maya News stated that Disney Cruise Line is the company that is interested in building the new cruise terminal. With the cruise industry growing at a feverish pace, there are a few days each year when there isn’t enough pier space for all of the cruise ships.
A fourth cruise terminal was also proposed two years ago but was shot down by local residents as they thought it was unnecessary. This fourth proposed dock would have been located on the north side of Cozumel.
Cozumel is one of the most popular cruise ports in the Caribbean with nearly every cruise to the Western Caribbean stopping there.
There are currently three cruise terminals in Cozumel. Punta Langosta is located closest to downtown. The International Pier and Puerto Maya are located a few miles south and are the center of cruise activity in Cozumel. Puerto Maya is where Carnival Corporation ships dock with various other cruise lines docking at the International Pier.
