Several news agencies are reporting that at least 12 cruise passengers have died after their tour bus flipped over on a highway in Mexico earlier today.
The tour bus was headed to the Mayan ruins at Chacchoben at the time of the accident. The cause of the accident is under investigation and it is unknown at this time what caused the bus to lose control and to flip over.
There were 31 cruise passengers, the driver, and a tour guide on the bus at the time of the crash. Video images from the scene show the bus on its side in vegetation off the highway, with some survivors lying on the pavement while others walked around.
Costa Maya Mahahual, the bus company involved, said in a statement that the bus was carrying tourists who had arrived to the coastal town of Mahahual aboard a cruise ship.
Royal Caribbean has confirmed that the passengers were from Serenade of the Seas and Celebrity Equinox.
