Princess has recently ordered the construction of 2 new cruise ships to be built in Italy. The Fincantieri shipyard near Trieste, Italy, has just had a keel laying ceremony for the beginning construction stages of the Regal Princess, which is to be a 3,600 passenger cruise ship.
The keel laying ceremony involved a typical blessing by a priest, followed by positioning the giant 500 ton pre-built keel into place via a large crane.
The Regal Princess is expected to be completed in the spring of 2014.
Princess has not had a new ship built since 2008, and the cruise line hopes to generate some excitement with these two new ships, including the first ever “sea walk” on the both new ships, which will allow passengers to walk on a glass bottom walkway that extends 28 feet off the side of the ship and lets passengers get a direct look at the ocean 128 feet below their feet.
The Royal Princess, which is a name the company has used a couple times before, is expected to be completed in June of 2013.
The cruise line has all kinds of new amenities that have never been offered on a Princess ship before and hopes to see a boost in revenue from its efforts.
