*** Update: It has come to our attention that the narratives in this story may not be as the owner has described them to be.  One of the reasons for the lack of insurance at this resort may have been dictated by several illegal or suspicious activities being undertaken by the owner.  Although he has declared the fire as arson, the facts have yet to be substantiated and there is reason to believe readers should do their due diligence before funding this project.

Little French Key is a private Island Resort in Roatan, Honduras which TripAdvisor has rated as the #1 attraction in Roatan.  On Sunday, August 26th, the resort suffered a devastating fire that is estimated to have caused over $3 million in damages.

The damage is still being assessed as multiple buildings and structures have burned to the ground.

The popular attraction was also home to an animal sanctuary which has helped to rehabilitate animals that had suffered abuse.

According to the GoFundMe page that has been set up by the owners,

“All of our animals except one Rabbit and two parrots have been gathered safe and we are in process of making temporary shelters and bringing in moveable enclosures to house them.”

Arson is suspected to have caused the fire as Little French Key has reportedly had a difficult relationship with local authorities.

At the time of this writing, over $2,300 has been raised on the GoFundMe page and the resort is attempting to raise $3 million as their goal.

Little French Key has a 4.5 star rating and over 3,000 reviews on TripAdvisor.  If you would to help you can visit the link above and stay up to date with ongoing developments.

The family at Little French Key are asking for help as they have described Sunday as “a very sad day”.

“If you love Little French Key, now is the time to act, we seriously are in need of assistance. All you can do to help us will be much appreciated we really need it, the animals need it, the employees need it and LFK needs it.”

The resort offered pristine beaches, stand-up paddle boarding, boat tours, horse back riding, snorkeling, massage, zip-line, jet-ski rental, and dining. No word yet on when the popular attraction will be up and running again.

  1. I have been to Little French Key twice and was planning on returning this November. “A little corner of paradise” is an accurate description, and I hate that someone tried to destroy it. It might be the #1 attraction in Roatan, but they limit the number of guests each day and so the guest feels like they’re at a semi-private retreat.

My heart goes out to everyone at LFK.

  2. Very disappointing that arson is suspected. The country of Honduras is a nasty place with the exception of several of the islands off of the coast. The government and culture are generally corrupt so it is not too surprising that the problems are starting to impact the resort areas. What a shame.

  3. Sad news. I’ve been going to ROATAN for 15 years and done just about everything there is to do on the island. Little French Key was my favorite place. It was magical. I had another visit planned in October and I’m so disappointed.

  4. Terrific fire. Poor people. I hope we will see updates when they are able to rebuild their beautiful resort Island.

  5. We have been to LFK many times and it is truly a a small piece of Heaven on earth. The staff has always been exceptional. I have never seen any of the animals mistreated in any way. The devastation here is unimaginable. I pray that whoever did this gets the justice they deserve. Karma will find you if the authorities do not. Moshe, keep the faith and continue to do what you do. For every 1 that hates it (or you), there are 1000 that love it/you. We WILL be back and you will too Little French Key!
