Marking the 50th anniversary in 2017, Caribbean Princess is the first post-Panamax cruise ship to take more than 3,000 guests through the newly opened Agua Clara locks on the Atlantic side of the canal that opened in June 2016, as part of the 10-year, $5.4 billion “Neo-Panamax” expansion.
Previously, only vessels with a maximum width of 106 feet could enter the locks. Technically, the Disney Wonder was the first PASSENGER CRUISE ship to transit the new Expanded Panama Canal locks on April 29th 2017. The Princess might be the first Post Panamax Cruise ship to make the transit but the Disney Wonder will hold the title of the very first Passenger cruise ship to make the crossing.
Your article is incorrect. I was on the first passenger ship to go through the new locks. That ship was the Disney Wonder. We went through on 4/29/17. You might want to get your facts correct.
