Cruise Lines Cancel Shore Excursions in Mexico After Warning From U.S. State Department

At least two cruise lines (Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean) have begun to cancel shore excursions that involved ferries in Cozumel, Mexico after the U.S. State Department issued a warning to U.S. tourists.

The reason for the warning from the U.S. State Department was due to an explosion on a tourist ferry last month. Investigators later found an explosive device onboard the ferry.  On Thursday, two more explosive devices were found attached to another ferry in Cozumel.

Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas is visiting Cozumel, Mexico today and passengers received a letter stating that all shore excursions that involved taking a ferry were canceled.  Passengers who booked shore excursions that involved taking a tourist ferry were refunded in a form of credit to their onboard account.

The cruise line included the following in the letter: “We feel it is important to make you aware that the U.S. State Deparment today published a safety warning discouraging travel on tourist ferries in Cozumel.

The U.S. State Department remains confident of the Mexican government’s efforts to ensure the safety of all tourist in the country. However, in an abundance of caution we are canceling sponsored shore excursions that involve tourist ferries. We also discourage guests from taking part in independent excursions that involve tourist ferries.”

The letter went on to say that the safety and security of the passengers and crew members is always foremost in the cruise line’s mind.  Guests should also have a heightened sense of awareness of their surroundings so they can have a memorable trip to Mexico.

Cruise Fever has reached out to Carnival Cruise Line and received the following response in regards to the situation in Mexico:

“In an abundance of caution, we have cancelled all ship-sponsored tours that make use of ferries between Cozumel and Playa del Carmen and we are strongly advising our guests that ferries from Cozumel to the mainland be avoided.”

Cruise Fever will have all updates from cruise lines when we hear back from them.

  1. Liberty of the Seas and Carnival Liberty are two different ships with two different Cruise Lines. So, they are NOT the same

  2. You spend a lot of time at Sea on that one (9 days). I think the Norwegian Cruise (7 days) gives you more Hawaii — you have 2 overnight stays. NCL is not my all time favorite cruise line, but I really liked their Hawaii cruise and they do have the best itinerary for Hawaii –in my opinion. Plus, much of the entertainment and activities on board will be Polynesian themed because they do that itinerary all year long on that ship. If you enjoy a lot of sea days, then I say go for the 15 day Princess. 9 days out of 15 is just too many sea days for my liking.

  3. I had so much in consumel Mexico it’s a paradise and felt so safe, my problem was when I returned to Miami my phone was snatched at the port …yes here in the USA

  4. Mexico is a mess. The counterfeit liquor is enough reason for me not to go there but bombs on Ferries is straight up terrorism. Good thing there are many other vacation options. I tried to send an email to the Mexican Tourism Board via their website contact link and when I hit “send” I got an error message.

  5. It would be nice if the cruise lines would tell which excursions theytare canceling, like maybe a list.

  6. I was just there last week (Feb 23’rd) on Navigator of the Seas… There was no evidence of anything off that we noticed. After watching the video of the bomb, i’m surprised they were able to clean up the remnants of the explosion this quickly. This is going to devastate the economy of Playa Del Carman and Tulum. I hope they can get this under control
