Fire Breaks out in Engine Room on Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship

A small fire broke out in one of the engine rooms on Royal Caribbean’s Splendour of the Seas earlier this morning.

The fire was contained and extinguished, 19 crew members and one passenger were treated for smoke inhalation.  All but one crew member have now been released.  All onboard systems are functioning as normal.  Royal Caribbean confirmed details of the fire on their corporate Twitter account early Thursday morning.  The cause of the fire is still unknown at this time.

Splendour of the Seas, a 69,500 gross ton 2,000 passenger cruise ship, is on a seven night round trip cruise out of Venice, Italy.  The ship will bypass the last port call in Argostoli, Greece, and sail back to Venice.  Previous port stops on the cruise included Kotor, Corfu, Piraeus (Athens), and Mykonos.

Cruise Fever will continue to monitor this breaking story and will have all updates when more information is available.  Photo Credit:  Kefalonitis94 – Own work. Licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0 via Commons
