Cruise Radio is reporting that Carnival Breeze rescued 25 Cubans refugees yesterday when the ship was on her way back to Miami near the end of a six night cruise to the Western Caribbean.
Veteran travel journalist Becky Beall was on Carnival Breeze and posted to her Facebook page “The Travel Voice by Becky” giving details about when the cruise ship came across the raft off of the coast of Florida. The Breeze was approximately 90 nautical miles from Key West, Florida.
The U.S. Coast Guard was notified and arrived in 2-3 hours and took over the rescue. There were no itinerary adjustments made to Carnival Breeze and the ship arrived back in Miami on time. Repeated announcements were made to the passengers on Carnival Breeze explaining why the ship was stopped and what procedures were taking place. According to Becky Beall, passengers were kept “well informed” of the events that were going on.
The Cuban refugees remained on the raft alongside Carnival Breeze until the U.S. Coast Guard arrived. The ship was then released from the scene and began to make her way back to PortMiami.
