No, Carnival Legend Did Not Just Run Aground on a Sandbar, Despite Online Reports

Misinformation in the cruise industry is all too commonplace. And headlines like “cruise ship hits sandbar” might get clicks, but they just don’t pass the reality test.

A post on Reddit was getting a lot of eyeballs and comments as it claimed that Carnival Legend had run aground on a sandbar in the Baltic Sea, leaving passengers “stuck” and waiting for answers on their way from Estonia to Finland.

But Reddit wasn’t the only place this claim is being made. A few accounts on Facebook and X are also “reporting” that the Carnival ship struck a sandbar and it’s a “dire” situation. The main Reddit post making this claim has over 60 comments and 80+ upvotes as users chime in.

While a headline like this will get a lot of attention, let’s take a closer look at what actually happened on the 2,124-passenger ship.

First, let’s just clear the air: The ship is fine, nobody is stuck, and there isn’t a sandbar in sight.

Here is what actually went down.

How the Rumor Got Started

The worry started when a passenger’s family member posted on the r/CarnivalCruiseFans community online, stating that the ship had suddenly ground to a halt in the middle of the night.

Cruise ship tracking sites showed that Carnival Legend’s speed had dropped to about 1 knot before displaying as “N/A.”

And of course, the internet did what the internet does, and the “sandbar” rumor was born.

The online post worded it like this:

My family is currently on the ship and stated that they just ran a ground on a sandbar and are currently stuck. As of right now, passengers have not been notified as to what the plan of action is for moving forward and getting the ship unstuck.”

Why a Sandbar is Very Unlikely

While hitting a sandbar is something every vessel would want to avoid in places like the Bahamas or the Mississippi River, a pesky little thing called “geography” breaks this myth into pieces.

Carnival Legend was traveling through the Gulf of Finland, navigating the waters between Tallinn and Helsinki. According to standard maritime charts, the average depth of the water in this channel is roughly 230 feet.

So yes, rather impossible to run aground here.

What Actually Happened?

So, why did the ship stop? Passengers currently on board eventually cleared up the mystery, confirming that the “grounding” was actually a routine, planned operational event.

We did not hit a sand bar,” one passenger posted directly from the ship. “We did however complete an annual compass calibration that took several hours as we spun in a very, very slow circle.

Another cruiser on board confirmed that the cruise director made an announcement over the PA system explaining the annual drill, noting that it was a complete “non-event” that simply required the ship to safely idle and pivot in the calm waters to calibrate its navigation systems.

I’m currently on the ship also. It was just an annual drill. The cruise director announced it over the PA. It was a non-event for all the passengers as it changed nothing. The area is incredibly calm and as other people mentioned we are just wasting time anyway before going to Helsinki. We are in port this morning on time with no issues,” one commenter on the Reddit thread stated.

Current Status: Smooth Sailing

The ship is sailing at a smooth 12 knots right now, according to Cruise Mapper, and the ship’s itinerary is still on schedule.

The ship arrived in Helsinki, Finland with no issues and is headed to Nynashamn, Sweden with an expected arrival time of 8:00 AM on Sunday.
