The SS United States, one of the most beloved ships ever built, is scheduled to be sunk next month and will become the world’s largest artificial reef.

The SS United States, America’s Flagship, is the fastest passenger ship ever built. The vessel won the Blue Riband for the fastest Transatlantic crossing, averaging over 35 knots.
Unfortunately, after decades of unsuccessful preservation efforts, the ship will be sunk 22 nautical miles southwest of Destin-Fort Walton Beach. The sinking is scheduled for the second week of November 2026, as long as weather allows.
The Okaloosa County Board of County Commissioners is working with their safety and security partners for a safe and efficient deployment.

This is a move forward to create a one-of-a-kind resource for the environment and for their tourism industry as the ship becomes the world’s largest artificial reef.
SS United States Conservancy, originally the SS United States Preservation Society, spent several decades trying to preserve the ship as the vessel slowly deteriorated while being docked in Philadelphia.
Effort to Bring the Ship Back into Service

In early 2016, Crystal Cruises announced an ambitious plan to refurbish and restore the cruise ship and bring her back into service.
SS United States by Crystal Cruises would have been an 800-passenger luxury cruise ship with 400 suites. The cruise line wanted to restore the ship’s storied history and keep several original features of the ship. It would have remained the fastest passenger cruise vessel in the world.
Six months later, the cruise line said that costs and technical challenges of returning the historic ship to service were insurmountable.
Crystal did make a $350,000 donation to the ongoing mission of trying to save the ship. The SS United States remained docked in Philadelphia while efforts to “Save Our Ship” continued.

In 2024, the ship was evicted from its berth and was sold to Okaloosa County, Florida, in October 2024. The ship will be laid to rest in the waters of the Gulf next month.
Okaloosa County said more details on the ship’s sinking will be released in the coming weeks.
