Norfolk Cruise Port Review and Cruise Lines

Norfolk’s Half Moone Cruise Port

Norfolk may not offer the sheer volume of mega-ships and cruise lines found in bigger Florida ports, but if you live in the Washington DC area or anywhere in the Mid-Atlantic states, you’ll love having a convenient local option that skips the $400 plane ticket or 15-hour drive.

The main building at the port is the Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center, a state-of-the-art facility that’s undergone significant $12 million upgrades in recent years to support year-round operations. Even as a smaller port, cruisers consistently rave that it’s one of the easiest and most hassle-free embarkation experiences they’ve ever had with smooth traffic flow, quick customs, and a straightforward layout.

This updated Norfolk cruise ship port review covers the basics of the port today, plus what ships and itineraries you can expect throughout the year.

The port is only about a 20-minute drive from Norfolk International Airport (ORF). A taxi, Uber, or Lyft can get you there for around $20–25. That might sound a bit steep, but it saves you from dealing with parking if you don’t need it, and you’ll appreciate the simplicity after flying in.

What cruises are offered out of Norfolk?

Options have grown nicely in recent years. Norfolk has transitioned into a year-round homeport, primarily with Carnival Cruise Line. Carnival Sunshine now sails regularly from here, offering a solid variety of 6- and 8-day cruises to the Bahamas and Eastern Caribbean, with occasional longer or specialty sailings.

You can typically find departures to ports like Bimini, Nassau, Half Moon Cay, Grand Turk, and sometimes Bermuda. Itineraries often include a good balance of sea days and fun beach stops, perfect for a relaxed getaway.

In addition to the standard Bahamas runs, look for seasonal cruises too, including potential Canada/New England sailings or longer “Carnival Journeys” on select dates. Starting in May 2027, the larger Carnival Freedom is scheduled to reposition to Norfolk, giving even more options to local residents.

Sidenote: While Royal Caribbean’s Grandeur used to sail from Norfolk (and passengers loved the port during that time), Carnival has been the main player in recent seasons. The upgraded facilities have kept the high ratings coming in.

Recent Port Improvements

To handle increased traffic and year-round service, the city invested in major rennovations to the Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center. New ramps, better customs processing, and redesigned pickup/drop-off areas have made the experience even smoother. These changes, along with plans for pier extensions, are helping position Norfolk as a convenient East Coast alternative for Mid-Atlantic cruisers.

The port is compact and easy to navigate with no massive terminals or confusing layouts. Many recent reviews still call it one of the most stress-free ports in the country.

There are several hotels within easy walking distance of the port, so if you arrive early or want to extend your trip with a few days in Norfolk before or after your cruise, you won’t need a ride to lodging. Options like the Norfolk Waterside Marriott, Hilton Norfolk The Main, and other downtown properties put you right near the action and the terminal.

Whether you’re looking for a quick Bahamas escape or a longer Caribbean adventure without the hassle of major airports and traffic, Norfolk delivers a relaxed, no-fuss cruising experience right in your backyard.
