Royal Caribbean has officially revealed the headlining theater production for its next ship, Hero of the Seas, to debut in about 10 months, and it should have a lot of younger cruisers excited.
The cruise line announced today that it is bringing a beloved Broadway hit to sea for the very first time, all to be unveiled on its fourth Icon-class ship.

When Hero of the Seas debuts in August 2027, cruisers sailing out of PortMiami will be able to catch “The SpongeBob Musical” in the ship’s main Royal Theater.
This will be the first at-sea version of the 12-time Tony Award-nominated Broadway production inspired by the hit Nickelodeon series.
SpongeBob in the Royal Theater
The production will adapt the Broadway storyline, following SpongeBob, Patrick, and the rest of Bikini Bottom as they race against time to save their undersea home from a volcanic eruption.
The show features a book by Kyle Jarrow and a familar score packed with original songs written by a mix stars, including Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Lady A, John Legend, Cyndi Lauper, They Might Be Giants, and Panic! At the Disco, along with music by David Bowie.
Christi Coachman, Vice President of Entertainment for Royal Caribbean, highlighted the cruise line’s focus on family-friendly experiences with the announcement:
“Our entertainment lineup on Hero of the Seas is designed with something for everyone. ‘The SpongeBob Musical’ delivers on that by bringing generations together through a story families know and love, while showcasing the creativity, cutting-edge technology and world-class production that can only be experienced on a Royal Caribbean vacation.”
Royal Caribbean is no stranger to bringing popular productions to sea. Shows like Grease, Hairspray, Mamma Mia!, and Cats having headlined on other ships over the years.
