Eight Year Old Drowns in Cruise Ship Swimming Pool

An eight year old boy drowned in a swimming pool on Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas on Monday while the ship was at sea multiple news sources are confirming.

The boy was spotted by another passenger who pulled him out of the pool. The medical staff on board responded quickly and performed CPR for more than an hour. However, they were unable to revive him.  A letter was sent out to all passengers on Liberty of the Seas informing them of the tragedy. The letter asked to respect the privacy of the family and said how important it was to look out for each other and be compassionate and considerate.  Royal Caribbean also added:

“We extend our most sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family and friends.  I ask that you join us in keeping the child’s family in our thoughts and prayers.”

The cruise line is doing everything they can to help the family.  The Royal Caribbean Care team is providing assistance to the family and friends of the eight year old boy.

There are no lifeguards on Royal Caribbean cruise ships.  Disney Cruise Line is currently the only mainstream cruise line to assign lifeguards to the swimming pools on their ships.

Cruise Fever also sends our condolences and prayers to the family and friends of this eight year old boy. Liberty of the Seas is currently on a seven night cruise out of Galveston, Texas with port stops in Cozumel, Roatan, and Costa Maya.

  1. I just dont get it. If you are going to take a child on vacation… Then be responsible for them and WATCH over them. A ship is not a gigantic play ground. I see this way too often as a travel agent and I think someone “Guardian” should be held responsible. They should be charged with Neglect and involuntary manslaughter.

I feel for the family but at the same time if they were being responsible adults this could have possibly been prevented. I do not know the details of the situation but how does one drown if they are being watched over properly.

My 8yr old child would never be in the pool without me in it or me watching them like a hawk.

I just dont get it at all…

Prayers to the entire family for peace in their time of saddness.

    • I agree, if your child is in the pool or any where around the pool then the parent is responsible not the cruise line. I do feel so bad for the family but parents take notice “you are responsible for your child”.

  2. condolences to the boys family really sad news just before the christmas holiday…….just goes to show the value of having a vigilant lifeguard on duty during pool activity!

    • It is also up to the family to keep an eye out on their children. A lot of them get on board and think that it’s the cruise lines’ responsibilities to look after children. They are YOUR children – look after them. Condolences to the family
