Carnival to Convert Destiny into Carnival Sunshine with Huge Waterpark

carnival destiny to sunshineCarnival has just announced that the Carnival Destiny cruise ship will be transformed into the Carnival Sunshine with a $155 million makeover that will take 49 days to complete while the ship is docked in Italy.

The overhauled ship will feature a new Asian restaurant, a new bar, a pizzeria, café, milk shake center and some other fine amenities.  But the biggest part of the project will be a completely new water park that will have the cruise lines largest waterslide.

Carnival’s Waterworks will have a racing theme and will feature 5 waterslides, including the 334-foot long Twister slide, which is the longest for Carnival.  This enclosed water slide offers a turn over the side of the cruise ship with a transparent chute that allows rider to have a quick glimpse of the ocean water from above.

There will also be 2 side-by-side water slides where riders can race against each other down a 235-foot water slide called Speedway Splash.

The waterpark will also contain 40 other interactive water features, with the main attraction being the 300 gallon drenching bucket, which will be in the middle of the Splashzone for the kids.

The Carnival Sunshine will not be completed until April of 2013 when it is scheduled to book sailings.

So what itineraries will the madeover ship have?   In April of 2013 the Sunshine will sail on 14 day voyages from Venice to Barcelona, and then for the next 6 months the ship will go on 9 and 12 day cruises from Barcelona and all around the Mediterranean.   In the first week of November after a 16 day transatlantic cruise from Barcelona to New Orleans, the ship will offer 7 day sailings to the Caribbean.

Carnival is celebrating the transformation of the Destiny into the Sunshine with a contest on its Facebook page.  Contestants are to take before and after pictures of a place in their homes or offices and show how they made the space more comfy, cozy, or more fun.  The winner will receive a free cruise on the ship.
