The rankings are based on independent research and can be found in the 2016-2017 Cruise Industry News Annual Report. The report is a complete market overview of the entire cruise industry and also contains a comprehensive directory of cruise lines. The rankings based on capacity in 2016 are as follows:
- Carnival Cruise Line
- Royal Caribbean
- Norwegian Cruise Line
- Costa Cruises
- Princess Cruises
- MSC Cruises
- AIDA Cruises
- Celebrity Cruises
- Holland America Line
- Star Cruises/Dream Cruises
Costa Cruises and Princess Cruises swapped places from their rankings in 2015. AIDA and Celebrity also switched spots with AIDA moving into 7th for most capacity.
