River Cruise Ship Collides with Lock in Vienna, Injuring 14 Passengers

A river cruise ship struck a lock structure on the Danube River in Vienna early Friday morning, leaving several passengers with minor injuries.

The MS Anna Katharina collided with a quay wall and lock gate at the Freudenau lock/power plant in Vienna around 4:00AM local time on July 24, 2026.

According to news reports, the ship was carrying around 200 passengers and crew members as it traveled from Bratislava toward the Wachau region.

Emergency Response and Injury Report

According to initial reports:

• Injuries: 14 passengers sustained minor injuries.
• Hospital Care: 6 passengers were taken to local hospitals for further checks, while 8 were treated on site.
• Passenger Safety: Rescue officials confirmed there were no serious or life-threatening injuries, and no one entered the water.

The bow of the vessel sustained noticeable damage from the impact.  The injured passengers complained of pains in their backs, necks, and chests due to the impact. Some reports are stating that the vessel was traveling near full speed when it made contact with the lock.

Emergency responders quickly secured the area, inspected the hull, and confirmed the ship remained stable, although the pictures of the ship are dramatic to say the least.

Investigation and Context

Authorities are investigating the cause of the collision, with a possible technical malfunction under consideration.

The ship’s captain, a 49-year-old Bulgarian national, is expected to provide a statement as part of the probe.

Tour operators are currently arranging transfers for passengers as this sailing has been cut short. Due to the damage sustained, it’s expected that the following cruises on the vessel will have to be canceled. 

Built in 2019, the MS Anna Katharina is a modern river cruise ship known for comfortable itineraries along European rivers. The vessel is able to accommodate a maximum of 182 passengers across 90 cabins.

The river ship is owned by Scylla AG, a Swiss-based river cruise company headquartered in Switzerland.
