CocoCay Tips and Review

CocoCay Bahamas
CocoCay Bahamas

Imagine spending a day on a small, secluded island in the Bahamas with white sand beaches and clear blue waters.  Royal Caribbean was able to offer this to their passengers when they leased Little Stirrup Cay.  Located near Norwegian’s private island Great Stirrup Cay, Royal Caribbean changed the name the name of the island to CocoCay (Cay pronounced “key”).

Swimming, snorkeling, and sun bathing are just a few of the activities offered on CocoCay.  The most popular activity is to rent a waverunner to explore the island and the lighthouse over on GSC.  Parasailing is also offered for those that would like a 400 foot bird’s eye view of CocoCay.  There is also the Caylanas Aqua Park, a fun filled floating playground for children. Beach side hammocks are also available on a first come first served basis.

There are a variety of colorful tropical fish that inhabit the waters.  There are also stingrays, coral reefs, squid, sea urchins and  jellyfish.  The jellyfish are the worst during the months of September/October.  Other times of the year you are likely to not even see one.  You can rent snorkeling gear on the island.  Many choose to bring their own gear to save money.  On eBay, you can get new snorkeling gear for roughly the same amount that it costs to rent it on CocoCay.  This also lets you use it on other islands and trips as well.

Due to the shallow waters around shore, tenders are used to transport the passengers from the cruise ship to the island. Because of this, there are times where the ship will skip this port if the captain feels it is unsafe to load and unload on tenders.  This is mainly in the winter months when cold fronts move in or when storms are in the area. If this happens, you will have a sea day and the ship will have extra activities that weren’t normally scheduled.

There are no restaurants and shops on the island.  However, they do have a variety of cold drinks available to be purchased.  There is an island style sea side buffet served on the island from noon until 2 pm.  If you are planning on getting something to eat from the buffet, it is best to go early and not wait.  Recent cruisers have stated that there are slim pickings at the buffet from 1:30 on.

The following ships call on CocoCay:  Monarch of the Seas, Majesty of the Seas, Enchantment of the Seas, Freedom of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, and the Liberty of the Seas.
