The world’s two largest cruise lines will help finance a new pier on Grand Cayman that will allow cruise ships to dock when visiting the Caribbean island.

The Cayman Compass is reporting that Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean will help fund the project.  Both cruise lines are a part of Verdant Isle Port Partners, the preferred bidder for the project.

The project is expected to cost up to $200 million to build and will take two and a half years to complete. Each passenger that visits Grand Cayman will be levied with a $8 per head fee.

An estimated two million cruise passengers each year are expected to visit Grand Cayman as a result of the new port and pier.  The new piers will be able to accommodate the largest cruise ships in the world including the Oasis class from Royal Caribbean.

Larger cruise ships have bypassed stopping in Grand Cayman due to the need for tenders.  For the past several years, different ideas have been presented to help eliminate the need for tenders.

One idea that was rejected was an interesting cable car system that would help ferry passengers to the port.

A timetable was not given for when the construction on the new pier will begin.
