David Mossman, a 46 year old man from Texas, jumped from the 10th Deck off Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas at approximately 11 p.m. on Friday while the ship was 40 miles south of Key Largo’s Carysfort Reef Light.  The cruise line immediately contacted the Coast Guard and the search began to find Mossman.

After an exhaustive effort covering over 2,500 square nautical miles, the search was called off late Sunday evening.  The Coast Guard used planes, helicopters and other ships in the search effort.

Chris Eddy, search-and-rescue technical specialist at the Coast Guard 7th District, said “We want to extend our condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Mossman as the decision to suspend a search is never an easy one to make and is done with great care and deliberation. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts and an exhaustive search, our crews were unable to locate him.”

  1. My Condolences to the Missing Passenger,Mr Mossman. However this and/or other related unfortunate incidents will not in the least deter me from enjoying a cruise vacation. Cruisers should be aware of all security measures and be careful and diligent when cruising. Cruising will always be the safest most cherished vacation anyone can have.

  2. Thank you for being the news outlets the most accurately describes what happened as far as what is known for the Navigator of the Season missing person/jumper. I was a passenger on the ship and every article I have read says very different things, including changes regarding when it happened to calling the sad incident a fall or saying the cruise line didn’t call the coast guard until hours later.

I appreciate that someone took what little public knowledge there is, and reported only that, instead of humbling facts or making them up.
