Royal Caribbean Updates Dining Dress Code, Removes Shorts

Last week Cruise Fever reported that Royal Caribbean added shorts to the approved dress code in the main dining rooms on casual nights.  The cruise line has now updated the dress code on their website and removed shorts and tank tops from the approved attire list.

RoyalCaribbean.com now has the following listed for the dress code onboard for meals:

  • Casual: You’re on vacation – relax! Jeans, polos, sundresses and blouses are all the right amount of laid back. Please keep swimwear to the Pool Deck. Shorts are welcomed for breakfast and lunch.
  • Smart Casual: Think of this as a step up from your typical dinner wear. Dress to impress with collared shirts, dresses, skirts and blouses, or pantsuits. Jackets, sports coats and blazers are snazzy and welcomed.
  • Formal: Make it a night out in your best black-tie look – suits and ties, tuxedos, cocktail dresses or evening gowns. There can be 1-3 formal nights during a sailing and is at the ship’s discretion.
  • Please note that bare feet are not allowed at any time in any venue and tank tops are not permitted in the Main Dining Room or Specialty Dining venues for dinner.

Royal Caribbean also added the chart below that lists the dress codes for each restaurant on their cruise ships.

  1. Would you go to a wedding or a funeral dressed in casual clothing? That is not respectful but it is happening. Horrible.

  2. We do a lot of sailing on Royal Caribbean and feel it is inappropriate for tank tops to be worn in the main dining room even on casual nights. Just visualize a man with a hairy chest sitting at a table near you. How about a woman very endowed overflowing the small tank top. Both not very appetizing.

    • I so totally agree. We returned two weeks ago from a cruise on the Harmony of the Seas and were totally shocked to see people, especially men, dressed extremely casual even on the one formal night. If they wanted to be ‘dressed down’ they should have eaten at the Windjammer café or any other place but a nice formal restaurant. There were flannel plaid shirts, capri pants on some men (mostly European men where they are popular) Just awful. We have been cruising since 1972 and things have really changed since then. People don’t seem to care how they look anymore. There has to be a place to go where people take pride in their appearance. What better place than a cruise??

  3. My family is sailing with RC Mar 2018 and more than ever we will eat at the buffet…because shorts are a signature that we are on vacation.
The change in policy will not affect customers like us who believe that MDR dress up is completely unnecessary……I guess it is for people who do not eat out at home..:)
