Freeport Grand Bahama Island Review and Tips

Port Lucaya Marketplace

Freeport, Grand Bahama Island’s port is located in an industrial area.  Unlike most cruise ports, there is very little to do at the port itself.  There are some local shops there, but that is it.  There is also nothing within walking distance.  There are 3 options for you in Freeport: Go to Lucaya, take a ship excursion, or stay on the ship.

The first option, Port Lucaya is the shopping capital of Freeport.  For $5 a person, you can take a cab to Lucaya, about a 20 minute drive.  There will be a sign for those going to Lucaya and many taxis lined up, getting one will not be a problem.  Lucaya is full of shops and local restaurants.  Directly across the road from the shops is a beach and several resorts.  Ladies, be prepared to be asked if you would like your hair braided everywhere you walk. Every beach in the Bahamas is public.  There are all types of water sports available.  You can also snorkel here but from experience, there generally aren’t too many fish near Lucaya.  There is also a casino at one of the resorts on the beach. Taking a cab back to the ship will not be a problem, there will be taxi’s everyone.

The 2nd option is to take an excursion.  Your ship will have a list of excursions from horse back riding, to snorkeling, private island tours, and you can even take a trip to an excluded tropical beach.  You can also book excursions with the companies directly, and usually save a little bit of money.  However, there is a little more risk involved and many do not mind if they can save a few dollars. Several of the Pirates of the Caribbean films were shot on Grand Bahama Island.  There are also a couple golf courses on the island.

The 3rd option is to enjoy a nearly empty ship.  With many leaving the ship for a few hours to explore the island, sit by the empty pool and enjoy a day in the Bahamas.
