Most of the places show a short video and introduction to dolphins to help you understand them better before you get into the water. They also offer some “do’s and don’ts” for your safety as well as the dolphins. Wet suits are also provided for you to wear in the water.
Some places offer what is called an “Interaction with Dolphins”. You don’t technically swim with dolphins, but you do get in the water with them. (water is usually around 2-3 feet deep) You get the opportunity to touch, feed, and kiss the dolphins while you learn some of the commands used by the trainers.
For the true dolphin experience, you can get in the deep water with them. While this is a little more costly, you get the chance to actually swim with them, hold their fin while they take you for a ride, and have them push you by your feet across the water. It is an amazing experience that you won’t regret.

You will not be allowed to bring your camera with you into the water to take pictures. They will however have a professional photographer taking many pictures of you that you can buy when the experience is over. Warning, these pictures are not cheap. At the Atlantis resort, the cheapest bundle they sell is over $50.
