Viking Ocean Cruises Floats Out Third Cruise Ship – Viking Sky

Viking Ocean Cruises marked a major construction milestone today at Fincantieri’s Ancona Shipyard when their third cruise ship, Viking Sky, was floated out.

Viking Sky will be the third of six ocean cruise ships from Viking Cruises and is expected to go into service in early 2017.  The cruise line is also expected to take delivery of their second ship, Viking Sea, tomorrow.  The fast growing cruise line is planning on having six sister ships in service by 2020, with an ultimate goal of 10 ocean cruise ships in their fleet.

Torstein Hagen, founder and chairman of Viking Cruises, gave the following statement: “It is a special day when a new ship meets water for the first time. This is our third ship to be floated out in three years, so it is indeed a proud moment for our entire Viking family. Our first ship, Viking Star, has enjoyed great success in her maiden season. I look forward to her five sister ships experiencing the same respective success as they debut over the coming years.”

The float out of a cruise ship marks a significant milestone as the ship moves into the final stage of construction.  In keeping with maritime tradition, a madrina, a special woman of honor, assisted with the ceremony.  Marit Barstad (Torstien Hagen’s sister) served as Viking Sky’s madrina and welded the commemorative coins under the ship’s mast.
